Save your leaves. Save your legacy.
We’re asking you to save your leaves because quickly freezing leaf and stem material is the easiest, cheapest way to preserve DNA showing the existence of a particular plant at a particular time. *
Here’s a quick video of Lelehnia DuBois, our Chief Community Officer, demonstrating the simple process. We’re hoping you’ll get a few leaves and stem material, place them in a Ziploc-type bag, get as much air out of it as possible before sealing, and stick the bag in your freezer. You may want to double-bag your sample to help better preserve it. That’s it!
When Canopyright launches in the fall both licensed operators and home growers will be able to time-stamp their frozen plant samples, for free, using QR codes and cheaply available tamper evident bags (we’ll mail you some if you’d like!). In other words, you can create digital “time capsules” documenting the cultivars that you’d like to go down in history! Your plant samples will always remain with you, although you’ll probably want to store samples in multiple freezers just in case the power goes out.
Canopyright allows you to build detailed profiles describing the cultivars preserved in your plant samples (including photos, tags, and document uploads). If you choose, you can also participate in a marketplace where cultivators will have the opportunity to negotiate the rights to grow your genetics. Otherwise Canopyright can be used as your own free-to-use private archive to document your cultivar library. You can learn more on our How it Works page. We’ve also included a demo video of the user interface at the bottom of this page.
Our platform was built with a fanatical commitment to data privacy. You can learn more from the video on this page titled “How we protect your privacy” and the “Tech Explained” section of our How it Works page. We are using distributed ledger technology to ensure that whatever information you would like to remain private, and any contracts that you enter into, will be kept confidential forever (even from us!).
If you enter into an agreement for a cultivator to grow your genetics (which, by the way, you’ll be able to do in a matter of seconds from your phone!) we’ll automatically process invoices monthly using Metrc “flowering plant tag” data. You can also enter into one-time contracts if you choose. We’ll take a small admin fee for doing your paperwork for you (which will be much less expensive than hiring a lawyer or relying on handshake deals!). We don’t get paid until you do.
If anyone in the supply chain needs to verify that a product is correctly labeled as containing your cultivar, or if you suspect that a cultivator is not honoring your agreement, you’ll be able to access your frozen sample. If a suspected plant is a clone of your plant, that will be clear from comparing the DNA tests of the suspected plant and your saved sample. Your plant sample gives you the same advantages of doing a DNA test, but without the up-front cost.

* It is superior to using dried material because the drying process could cause DNA degradation, and dried material can easily be purchased from the local dispensary. It is superior to using seeds, since the DNA in seeds is only half from the mother plant (the other half being from pollen).
